Not pointed out on any tour, the Hidden Begot is often stumbled upon by students during their wanderings between training and classes in Canterbury Hall. In various glass cases, on pedestals, and tucked upon shelves is an eclectic mix of items and bric-a-brac. Everything on the tall, dusty shelves and mantles and cubby holes and space is something lost at one point or another in Canterbury Hall and not yet found. If one loses something, this is the first place that should be sought.

It is not a free-for-all, there is an old Wood Golem present. Its limited functionality allows it to identify if someone wanting an object here is indeed the owner and stopping them from taking it. At some point in its life, someone carved the name John Jacob into his wooden body and the name has stuck.

Standing in the 'hidden begot' Sunny is idly browsing the various bric-a-brac of the lost and found. He can't take anything, everyone learned that after a few students were 'prevented' from taking things, but he can certainly look. There are many interesting items among the shelves, including things from years long forgotten, from before magic faded from the world. These most prized items are found in the glass cases. He seems to be debating something as he stands there examining the things, but is doing his best to restrain his idle hands from trying to manipulate the items. Not necessarily to take them, but just to examine them more thoroughly.

Just exactly when Harper wound up in the Hidden Begot would be difficult to pinpoint, a while ago perhaps if the direction from which she comes upon Sunny is a measure of things. She appears from around the back of one of the high-stacked shelves, one hand busied with rubbing dust from the edge of her left shoulder where she's brushed against something particularly ancient. "Oh. Hi." She pulls to a halt a few paces off, and slips her glasses from her face, using the hem of her shirt to polish dirt from the lenses. She peers at him owlishly as she does, going on to add after a few seconds of silence, "Place goes back much further then it looks. It's huge…" <English>

*

"That's what 'she' said," Sunny jokes, using a several hundred year old joke that somehow never died, or got old, in reference to 'it's huge.' Classic. Eyerolling at his own bad sense of humor, he glances back the way she'd come and asks, "Find anything fun? I'm not trying to take anything," he mentions and looks towards the golem knowingly, holding up his hands, "But I'm thinking I could do it. If I had to, with someone to help me," he adds the last two, and nods sagely. "Maybe. I feel like it'd make for a good end of term test of knowledge," he adds.
<English>

*

"Uh. Right…" Harper says in response to Sunny's joke, her gaze on him blank as she settles her glasses back on the bridge of her nose. She takes another couple of steps towards him, tucking rogue strands of hair back behind her ears, and shoves her hands into her pockets as she comes to a halt beside him. "I imagine you'd fail, you know. Nothing against your own skills, or anyone elses, but I expect that the mages run things pretty tightly, you know?" She pauses, draws a breath and twists her head to look full on at Sunny's profile. "Anyway. Why would you even want to do that? We're not naughty schoolkids here, right? I'm here to learn, not piss the mages off." <English>

*

"Because they just leave the one guy here, that thing, like that's all the defense that a bunch of stuff needs. It's like it's a challenge. Saying, 'we don't need more than this to stop you guys' and that gets my dander up," Sunny replies and stares at the golem for a second, then adds, "Not that I'm going to take anything now. I just, you know, think I could. Anyway, anything cool? I was going to look for lost old swords, but I'm guessing they didn't lose those often, back when they were carrying them around here," he says.
<English>

*

Harper shakes her head. "No. They did. I saw one back there a bit." A jerk of her head back towards the way she'd come. "It's not in the best of conditions, though I'm no judge of things. The leather binding around the handle is coming away, and the blade looks dull enough that it'd be blunt trauma that'd kill whatever it is that's being hit. I guess it meant enough to someone for it to wind up here though. I wonder how that even works. If it's because the person that's lost a thing is missing it enough, or the other way around?" Casually she assigns a force of will to inanimate objects, and leans to press her nose to the glass case that's been holding Sunny's attention. "What even is this in here?" <English>

*

Glancing back the direction she indicated, Sunny nods his head and makes a mental note to check it out in a bit. The question of what brings objects here makes him nod. "It's metaphysical, remember. They can literally just have items be transported here when they are misplaced, I'd assume," he mentions and turns to look at the thing again, "I think it's a very old metal puzzle. See how the rings and the loops all sort of tangle together? I think they are difficult to pull apart."
<English>

*

"Huh." Harper's hand lifts to join her nose where it's pressed to the glass. "I guess there's no accounting for how some people like to amuse themselves. Doesn't look like it'd be that hard to do. Without cheating, I mean." Because it'd be so very simple to cheat when a person can simply manipulate metals. A change of tack. "I'm glad I'm a phenom rather than an adroit. I don't like relying on anyone else or anything else to do what I need to do. Imagine if you were caught without your sword, or your armour. Whatever. Yesterday I managed to throw up a shield about myself. It was pretty amazing." If her thoughts seem a little scattered and random today, then there'd probably be a reason for that, her head turning to the side so her cheek now rests to the glass, eyes settling on Sunny as she speaks. <English>

*

"That's why I'll be learning to make a sword on the fly, but I take your meaning," Sunny replies and thinks about it for a moment. But overall, he does agree about having powers, but not being able to use them. They have the option of having a weapon anywhere and anytime, whereas Adroits need their specialized equipment, and that equipment can be misplaced. "You threw up a shield? What was the situation with that?" he asks, looking over at her and urging her away from the glass so that the golem doesn't get anxious. Not that it seems to get anxious.
<English>

Harper takes a step away from the case, and turns her back on it, the smallest of frowns appearing on her brow. "It was just practice," she quietly explains. "Not a situation as such, unless stopping myself getting soaked with water counts as one." She scuffs the toe of her boot against the floor, and there's a glimmer of a smile that slowly starts to banish her frown. "Managed to deflect the water back so that it soaked his own feet. It was… funny." There. She's admitted to having found humour in something, and the tip of her nose crinkles as she wraps her arms about her waist and gives herself the smallest of self-congratulatory hugs. "I heard they might be opening up dormitories here for any students that'd prefer to stop in Avalon and concentrate more on their studies. I'm thinking of moving myself in if so." <English>

*

When Harper hugs herself, Sunny reaches out and puts a hand on her shoulder, giving it a squeeze. She's the most reserved person he knows, so he isn't going to just outright hug her, she'd probably explode. "I'd move here too, just so my foster parents don't feel like they have to stay. I know I'd asked if I could come here on my own, when I came," he tells her, clearly liking the idea of being at Avalon without needing to go back and sleep in Albion just because of his foster parents. "I mean, the studies thing would be a great side benefit, but mostly I'd just not want to have to deal with the foster folks."
<English>

*

Harper cuts a glance to Sunny. A nod. He's right in that she'd probably explode if hugged as she's more than likely the least huggable person he'll meet. "You too? I mean, it's not like I don't love my family, because I do. Absolutely. Just I know I'd be more focused away from them. It's not like being here is a world away though, and I can see them every day if I want." A lift of her shoulders and a half-quirked smile is sent his way. "You know, your foster parents are probably really proud to be connected to you and considered family. I doubt they're looking to be shot of you anytime soon, and perhaps even enjoy whatever attention they might get because of it. Don't write them off too quick, 'kay? It's nice to know that someone has your back when needed." <English>

*

"Did you try to talk to your older brother, like I suggested?" Sunny asks, looking at her with a smile. He will get her to hug one day. It is one of his life's goals at this point. Listening to her talk, he nods his head at her words about his foster parents and explains, "I don't resent them or dislike them, but you have to understand Harper, they've only been my foster.. guardians, for a year. I didn't grow up with them. I was given to them because I'm too young to live on my own, and I get that, but they aren't like, 'my folks' they're people who were assigned to me. That said, I'm happy if they get something out of it, they've been good to me. I just don't really /need/ them. You know?"
<English>

*

Harper pulls a face. "I get that. I do. But everyone needs someone, don't you think?" Her arms wrap tighter about her middle, and she starts to walk towards the golem, eyes focusing in on the name that's carved into it. "Anyway. If it is a thing that they're going to offer dormitory accommodation here, I'm going to put my name down." A pause as she waits for Sunny to join her, and there's a softening of her expression before she goes on to add, "I suppose you must miss your real parents. I can't begin to imagine how it must be to lose even one of mine. I guess I'm lucky. And no, I've not spoken to my brother yet, though I will. It'll be fun to see how he reacts to what you suggested I say." <English>

*

"Everyone needs someone, yeah," Sunny confirms and nods at her a little. Seeing that she is continuing to hug herself, he feels weird not embracing her in some way. "I do miss them, yeah," he confirms with a nod of the head. "You'll have to let me know what he says. So, what do you make of this thing? It's wood, so I assume it's uh.. Merlin's? No, that's Earth. Baba Yaga's. Yeah, it must be hers," he nods to himself. "Who do you think this guy was?" he asks, pointing to the name carved on it.
<English>

*

Harper unwinds a hand from her waist, and presses the tip of her finger to the crudely carved name on the golem. "I don't know," she eventually confesses. "I mean, maybe it didn't belong to anyone as such, and was just put in here as a guardian? I like the name, though. John Jacob. It's like part of the person that made it is somewhere inside." Not that the name is necessarily even linked to the crafter or even the one-time owner of the golem, and she realises that, but somewhere along the line the two have blurred into one; golem and name. "Anyway. I should probably get going. Things to do. I've lost track of time since coming in here, and am more than likely late now." <English>

*

"Maybe," Sunny says and looks at it for a long moment, trying to understand something. "I don't think so, but maybe, in fact, the more I think about it, do you know anyone in our classes called John Jacob? Or is this thing that old?" he asks, thinking about it some more, he realizes he'll want to figure that out. He shrugs at himself then and nods at her words, "Oh, yeah, see you around Harper, let me walk with you to the portal."
